That’s a mouthful, but guess what? That’s exactly how I like my chocolate chip cookies. By the mouthful! That’s good enough for me - let’s go!
1. Who Invented Chocolate Chip Cookies?
Ruth Graves Wakefield is credited as the person who invented the chocolate chip cookie. She and her husband owned the Toll House Inn, a tourist lodge in Whitman, Massachusetts, in 1930. Chocolate chip cookies were invented in 1938, Ruth was experimenting with a crispy butterscotch pecan cookie that had been popular with her guests. She wanted to add chocolate cubes to the recipe, but finding she was out of those, she grabbed a Nestlé semisweet chocolate bar from her cupboard and used an ice pick to chip off little pieces to add into the batter, hence, chocolate “chips.” It was such a sensation that it hit the newspapers, and people would write in requesting the recipe for the so-called “Toll House Cookie,” the original chocolate chip cookie that put the Toll House Inn on the map!
2. Today’s chocolate chip cookie
The original chocolate chip cookie was a thin, crispy cookie with nuts and chunks of chocolate; however, today, there are as many variations on chocolate chip cookies as there are home bakers and cookie lovers! But what is the difference between a chewy cookie and a crispy cookie? Today’s New York chocolate chip cookie-lovers prefer a thick cookie that brings crispy edges and chewy middle together into one package. With a tantalizing crunch on the outside and a lush, moist center oozing with melted chocolate chips, our take on the classic is sure to satisfy and leave you craving more!
